Cities in Transition – How mid-sized cities are shaping Europe’s future

The first CITE Conference will take place in Skellefteå, Sweden, on 9-10 June 2026, bringing together European cities undergoing major transformation.

Six cities have been carefully selected to represent the breadth of Europe’s urban transformation. Together, these city cases illustrate the full spectrum of change, from rapid growth and sudden adjustment to post-industrial recovery, economic diversification and climate transition.

The first CITE Conference will take place in Skellefteå, Sweden, on 9 June 2026, bringing together six European cities undergoing major transformation.

Throughout the day, participating cities will share their experiences of managing change in practice – from industrial transition and workforce development to the evolving attractiveness of places undergoing rapid transformation. The focus is on real-world insights: what has worked, what has proven challenging, and what other cities can learn.

The conference is designed as a moderated exchange, creating space for reflection, discussion, and shared learning between cities facing similar challenges. It offers practical perspectives and lessons that can support cities in navigating complex and fast-moving change.

Selected as a New European Bauhaus (NEB) Satellite Event, the conference connects local transformation to broader European priorities.

The New European Bauhaus brings innovation, ambition and creativity together. It calls on all Europeans to imagine and build a sustainable and inclusive future that is beautiful for our eyes, minds, and souls.
